Lost & Found

I shot this story for the magazine, Mirabella, which was started by the former editor and chief of Vogue, Grace Mirabella who'd been replaced by Anna Wintour. The fashion editor took a big fancy to my work and gave me a huge spread. However, she was snapped up by Ralph Lauren and the story was then shelved.

We shot most of the story in and around the Plaza Hotel with the focus on making cloths do double duty when you travel. Like the lightweight trench coat above can also work as a robe.

Good basics and layers are a great way to get the most out of your travel wardrobe. It is also a way to save space in your carryon, wear on a few comfy layers! Something like the outfit below, is perfect for a flight or cross country drive.

One sparkly item is all you need to create a great evening look. It was this image below I rediscovered and used on Pie a few weeks ago, that reminded me of this long lost story.

Yes, it is heartbreaking when a shoot you love doesn't make it to print...so it is exciting to have this outlet to give new life to these images. It also is a tribute to the editor that even though they were shot quite a few years ago, they still look very current. If your curious to learn more about what goes on behind the making of a magazine, then I urge you to see the excellent & fascinating documentary: The September Issue.

absolutely breathtaking...not surprisingly, but wow...
That model is just stunning, too...
Gorgeous.
No idea when you did this but it could have been yesterday... I think it is also tribute to you and your style of work.
Just gorgeous!
this is just so beautiful ... the colors and the light are gorgeous ... thanks for sharing this with us and thanks so much for the link ... i love, love, love the thought of magazine shooting and the creativity that goes behind it ... i'll have to see if i can rent the dvd somewhere
i have to tell you that i'm so pleased that i stumbled across your blog ... there are so many photography blogs out there but the styles are all so similar ... color pops, tutus, and enormous bows :) ... i'm just so thankful that you're willing to share your work ... it's beautiful and inspiring ... thanks :)
I hadn't thought of this magazine in years! Somewhere I think I have the first issue tucked away. Its remarkable how timeless this shoot is, and how these pieces could easily be worn today with few updates. Which goes to prove that good basics never go out of style. Bravo on creating such a beautiful, evocative, and timeless spread!
Cheers!
Suzanne
absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely amazing, we are so glad that you have this blog so you can share this with us all! Looking forward to more Lost & Found!
Lovely!
Timeless and classic...simply stunning work!
Amazing shots! Thanks for sharing them. How long ago was this shoot? The outfits look timeless, but I'm curious as Mirabella magazine folded several years ago, right?
These were shot in the mid 90's, the magazine folded in 2000.
Thanks, Lara. I really loved that magazine, and actually, was just reminicing about it with a friend of mine the other day (who was also a fan).
These photos are gorgeous! I read a little about Grace Mirabella in an Anna Wintour biography I read a few years ago, so I would've loved to see the article too... And The September Issue is in my Netflix :)
