Sugar High

Atlanta has one of the firstKrispy Kreme Doughnut Shops in Georgia, built in the early 50's. Now you can buy them in your local grocery store but there is nothing like a hot one right off the line. Started in the 1930's byVernon Rudolph in Kentucky, he got the recipe from his uncle who had bought it off another merchant.

He opened his firstKrispy Kreme shop in Nashville in 1933 only to sell his interest in the business just 5 years later. The new owners moved base to North Carolina and the distinctive logo was designed by a local architect, Benny Dinkins.

The original recipe for theseyeast doughnuts is a well guarded secret. However, as of January 2008, thetrans fat content was reduced to 0.5 of a gram or less. TheU.S. Food and Drug Administration, in its guidelines, allows companies to round down to 0 g. Krispy Kreme benefited from this regulatory loophole and promotes its doughnuts as having "0 grams trans fat!" but who eats a donut thinking it is a healthy choice?

The classic glaze doughnuts are their best sellers but I have always been a jelly fan. They also do a unique cream filled that is also very tasty.

I love your site- it reminds me of other things I love: Emily Eveleth's donut paintings, for instance. Pamela Michelle Johnson does some as well. A good way to enjoy donuts without eating them.

I love the old Krispy Kreme on Ponce! I hope they never tear it down - it's nice that Atlanta has kept a few of its special old-timey landmarks! Lovely post...I enjoyed your photos of Krispy Kreme so much...now I'm hungry :)

I'm not a big fan of them. I find them a tad too sweet for me but in all fairness, I haven't had a hot one.

there's nothing like seeing that "Hot Now" sign glowing ... we can see the donuts run through the conveyor belt from the front of our store ... my son loves it :)

Ha, Savannah has a Krispy Kreme exactly like the one you've pictured... I always thought it was just an oddball, but maybe it was their building style for awhile?
