Knock Knock
This is a tale of two amazing homes, together but separate, converted from an old retail body shop and garage. Two free standing buildings now two amazing houses. My neighbors, Jean-Philippe Saldana an antique dealer and his wife, clothing designer,Amy Parrish bought this unlikely residential property with a clear vision.

The beauty is in the preservation of the original brick exterior and all its character with modern loft style additions. This is also reflected in the interior design choices that walk the same graceful line between old and new. Jean-Philippe oversaw the design and construction himself; from the reclaimed pine wood floors to the galvanized recycled steel roof.

The 19th century spiral staircase, like its owner, was imported from France, Jean-Philippe has traveled all over his homeland searching out his unique finds. According to Amy, "He is an outstanding appraiser and can identify an 18th century commode from a mile away!"

The upstairs has a clean, bright, open feel that leaves lots of options for creative use. Including clever built in nooks for either storage or display. There are also front and back terraces and two full baths.
The two houses share a communal driveway and there is also a beautifully crafted two-tiered outdoor space. This french barbecue includes a wood burning oven.
They lived in the smaller house that was once a store front, while working on the larger garage conversion. Still zoned for both commercial and residential they now use the smaller space for Amy's design business,Ruby & Regis.

Amy told me about the most difficult part of the renovation..."The weather was the biggest challenge and possibly lifting over 3000 blocks and bricks onto the second level - there is no wood in the construction - all steel framing. We are the house to come to in a tornado!"
Both properties have just been put on themarket as the couple starts looking for another reno challenge. They can be purchased together, giving the new owner the option of an income property or commercial work space. They will also consider separate offers.

Beautiful job and as always, great photos! I really love the barbecue, it really looks like somewhere in the french countryside.
Wow, you really can photograph anything. I love the style of these and your images, it really is like opening a copy of Dwell!
wow i've driven by this house b/f and would have never guessed that's what it was like inside! i love how the internet lets me be a nosy neighbor :)
i also have a question . . . any idea where the quilt and shams (in the shot next to the bathroom vanity) came from? they are EXACTLY what i've been looking for for over a year. i'm praying that they're available commercially but i have a sinking suspicion, considering the source, that i won't be that lucky but i have to ask.
thanks!
Looks like heaven. I love the combination of modern/vintage. Beautiful images, beautiful home. Makes me want to re-do everything in my house!
What an incredible space! They did a fantastic job.
just beautiful, lara! all of it! :)
how lucky are they to have you as a neighbor to take amazing images of their home!
i love the mix of modern and traditional also ... i have a mid-century house (1958) but have more of the 19th century style ... i'm trying to reconcile the two :)
That is truly original and inspiring - why is it that the things I love best are spaces, and unreproducable?
Decor is dead! Long live Style!
P.S. Your photos are in a different class from the realtor's.
And: I live in California, can't BELIEVE the price of this beautiful place! Maybe I should move...
This house is so beautiful and your photographs are just lovely. I am from Atlanta and now live in Seattle, so any time I see anything local on your blog (I subscribe on my feed), I get a little happier just because it is home-sweet-home.
fantastic.
