Lost & Found: Mitzi Martin

Back in the day, when I thought smoking was cool and Polachrome film even cooler, I worked a lot with a model named Mitzi MartinPolachrome was a brand new product, it came with it's own pack of developer and you needed this little machine to process it. The roll above resulted from a problem with my developer and the film came out still coated with a thin black layer. I could see the images had developed so I gently washed off the layer and this was the result. I showed them to the art director at L.A. Style, who liked the mistake enough to run it as a full page. I tried but could never duplicate the effect.

Mitzi had a dramatically different look, having dyed her blonde hair black and cut it into a boyish crew cut. A look that made her striking green eyes even more striking. These were shot on Polachrome as well, ads for the surf wear company, Jimmy Z. She had a thing for rockers and always stayed on the west coast, marrying musician Josh Todd

The last time I shot Mitzi was for Glamour, shot on location in L.A., I was living in NYC at the time and they flew me out to shoot some editorial stuff. Below is one of the cover trys we did. The original of this is truely lost, somewhere in my poorly organized files. So I scanned this from a little print I had made on a cool little polaroid printer I use to have.

Well, as per usual, I love the model and photography. The printing on the first two photos is gorgeous, it has a very intimate yet rugged affect. It reminds me of mono printing actually.
Stay fabulous,
Julia

love this post. those "mistakes" seem to become some of the best work we produce, imo. they are honest and such a true art form. lovely work.
