Stand In

Steph stands in for a bigwig at the CDC

Photo assistants often have to act as a stand in to help test the set up and lighting. These images can tell another story of what goes on behind the scenes. Here are a few images I especially liked and saved. All shot since moving south and switching to digital. In the old days it would have been recored with a polaroid and usually discarded. This group all have two things in common, they all went to Portfolio Center and were students of mine.

Kerie stands in for a shoot for Reader's Digest

Drew stands in on set for Alison Krauss during an album cover shoot

Fenando stands in to test light for a beauty shoot

Jamie stands in for the owner of this tree house shot for Garden & Gun Magazine

Ginny stands in for a cover shoot with singer Ciara

Emily stands in as I try out my hipstamic while shooting for Peachtree Lumber

Jon working it for a Sandpiper fashion shoot

For those interested...some of the actual images

Many are now working on their own or are in related fields. Kerie has worked for me the longest, while also becoming a very successful wedding photographer, our schedules rarely conflict so it just works. Fernando has done very well commercially, working mostly in Bogota, Columbia. Drew is one of the top digital techs in the city. While recent grads Emily and Jamie are both on the verge of big things.

What a great post! I really love that you use a lot of female assistants. Back when I was trying to break in to assisting I had more than a few male photographers tell me they were not comfortable with have women in the crew cause they did not like asking them to lift stuff! You are my hero :)!
