Landmark

The Bob's Big Boy in Burbank is more than a tradition, it is a bonafide California landmark and the oldest remaining Bob's in the country. It was built in 1949 and designed by Los Angeles-based architect Wayne McAllister. One of the original drive-in's, today it has become a meeting place for classic car collectors on the weekends and is still open 24 hours.

They also lay claim to the invention a the double decker burger, first created by the original Bob in 1937, thirty years before McDonald's introduced their "Big Mac".

More diner than fast food most choices include a nice size salad and their breakfast menu is epic.

So enamored have I always been with it's mid century design, that back in the 90's I photographed a then 13 year old Nick Stahl who had just completed his first big roll in "The Man Without a Face". Just one of many as it turns out. A favorite spot for many celebs, since it is located just around the corner from Warner Brothers Studios.

Though it is basically the same, they have done some renovations and I did notice they have updated the bar stools but kept them classically retro in style.

Nice post Lara, That's making me want a hamburger for lunch and I don't eat much beef!
Question: I shoot a ton of restaurants but they're always for publication so I set them up. When you shoot for your blog do you get permission ahead or just shoot on the fly?
Love your photos as always.
On the fly for the most part, I do sometimes tell them I need a table with good light and why and they have always been very nice and accommodating.
thanks for the walk down memory lane, lara! i used to go here with my parents as a kid all the time! great shots!
this post brought back memories of the big boy I used to with my grandparents in Michigan. they were good memories. Now that I'm older I love the style of the big boy restaurant. mid century family dining.
