Kawaii in Austin

Last weekend I visited my good friends Al and Heather in Austin and they treated me to a little of the local fare. Including some do-nuts from Shipleys, a Texas original.

From the awesome basic cake to sprinkles and coconut covered to cream filled... they offer up plenty of tasty, doughy goodness. And just like Texas, these puppies are big. They also offer "Kolaches" a rolled up bread thingy filled with yummy things like sausage or ham and cheese. Yee haw!

shipley's is the bomb.
we have one three blocks away...
and tomorrow is a kolache morning. :)

next time you go to austin, you need to mosey down I-35 thirty more miles and float the river
here in san marcos.

happy weekend.

I had no idea Shipley's was special. They are everywhere. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

The only issue I have with Shipley's (and most donut places around her in Texas) is their kolaches are not really kolaches. Kolaches are fruit filled pastries (kind of like a Danish). What most donut shops here call kolaches are really klobasneks. I remember my great grandma (who was from Czechoslovakia) making homemade kolaches for our annual family reunion every December. If you get a chance to visit your friends in Austin again, have them take you to a place nearby that will have kolaches made with fruit or poppy seeds. They are divine.
