Cruising South Lake Avenue

Pasadena has grown by leaps and bounds since my college days, though South Lake Ave was always a good destination for shopping and dinning. It now boasts an eclectic mix of old and new or hip and classic if you prefer.

Drapers & Damons, a ladies dress dynasty has held court on Lake with their flagship store since 1927.

Wahoo Tacos is popular and their grilled fish tacos are legendary.

This quaint alley of shops transports me back in time to a classic London Street.

Macy's now occupies the old Bullocks Wilshire in a beautiful art deco building designed by architect Welton Beckett. You can stop by Anthropologie for an owl cookie jar fix. Or eat lunch at one of my favorites, Cham Bistro, which offers a fresh take on Korean food. I am also eager to give Float Sandwich Shop a try, it's located at the end of that pretty atrium nook above.

Another new favorite, Beard Papa's, this oddly named chain imported from Japan serves up all kinds of artisan like creme puffs. Crazy good!

I've always loved that corner of Lake (and I believe Cordova) where the grand Macy's Department Store stands. I remember going as a kid there with my grandmother back in the Bullocks days and having tea upstairs in the tea room and outside patio, where I could lean over the side rails and peek down at the shoppers along Lake St. I'm glad the portholes are still part of the architecture of the building, and I hope you had a chance to ride the (I believe original) wood elevators!

I work about a block away from another iconic Beckett landmark, the Capitol Records Building, and last week I had the good fortune of spending a few days within the Beckett designed LA Sports Arena where of course I did my best to poke around and see parts of, which the public normally wouldn't be allowed to venture in to. You've inspired me to go back to that Macy's on Lake St. and do a little more exploring!

I worked in an office on Lake in the early '90s, and wow, has it changed. I remember when I won a $250 gift certificate to the Bullocks, and browsed in that same quaint alley of shops. Thanks for the memories!
