I love a magazine that is open to collaboration and have found the editors at Flea Market Style to be just that. Last winter while waiting to enter the gates at the Rosebowl Flea, I noticed what an interesting, eclectic and stylish crowd this monthly event attracts. From this thought sprang my ideal to do portraits on site of some of these interesting shoppers and I proposed the ideal to FMS who jumped on it.
So on a bright March morning I took a small crew to Pasadena's famed Flea and with media clearance arranged by the magazine we set up a backdrop just off to the side of a busy walkway. Over the course of the morning I photographed close to 50 willing strangers. Though, just as many we asked were not so willing or needed extra persuading. Each filled out a quick questionnaire and signed releases and provided contact info. These are some of my favorites images that did not make it into the magazine, mainly because the subjects did not respond in time when contacted and the writer needed more info than they provided.
I wanted a kind of traditional look for the portraits, using a nice very large mottled backdrop. I added tinges of warmth in post to give them an appropriate vintage feel.
