Thursday Three: 3 Women

3 Women is one of the most haunting movies of 1970's, one of my all time favorites and a natural choice for my Thursday three. Funny, disturbing, lovely, odd and ultimately puzzling, I promise it is not a film you will soon forget. Written and directed by Robert Altman, it features remarkable performances by Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek

These beautiful images were captured by the wondrous eye of Jean Pagliuso using a Widelux and then hand colored. Trust me, no photoshop was involved. They were used for several versions of the poster, I love this one's unusual triptych design.

Millie narrates the story with her daily diary entries, revealing how unaware she is of her own social awkwardness.

Pinky is the roommate who turns from mouse to vixen during the course of the film.

The third woman is a mural painter played by Janice Rule, though she stays more in the background. The film does become a bit confusing toward the end. Even Altman admitted he did not fully understand the ending though he had his theories. I last watched it over 15 years ago in an edited TV version. I just got it from Netflix and will watch it over the weekend and see how it strikes me now.

Oh and check out my guest post on the Leica blog.
