My new favorite camera may just be myiPhone! Ever since I discovered the appHipstamatic, which turns your phone into a groovytoy camera.

You can change out the lenses, film, flash and even add filters. The files are not huge but certainly big enough for web use and small prints.

There are near endless combinations you can create and yourphone stores a copy into your photo library automatically.  There is also an album view within the app. You can even enter your photo in theirHipstamatic contest, directly from your phone.

I did very little to any of these images, other than sharpen them a touch. All colors and textures come from film and lens choices. The app is only 1.99 and additional accessories are just 99¢.

While on the subject of photography, I watched the excellent documentary,Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens. The film was made by her sister and gives us an intimate look at the legendary photographer's life and work. She kind of just figured it all out as she went, it is both fascinating and inspiring. Shot before her recentmoney troubles came to light.

Serious Playthings

Toy cameras have become extremely popular in recent years. Many classics being retooled and re-released, such as theDiana andHolga. Along with new versions like theBlackbird, Fly and theLomo which have also become big sellers. I found this original vintageDiana above oneBay, where they can go for anywhere from $30 to $100 depending on condition.

Old chair shot with a vintage Diana

It is the dreamy quality of the plastic lens that seems to enamor users. My friend, photographerJean Allsop was the first to introduce me to them back when we were students. I found my firstDiana at aflea market in NYC a few years later.

I just discovered thatLomography makes aDiana lens and anadapter ring for myCanon Digital SLR (they also make them forNikons). So I ordered my own and will post some images when I get it. I love the idea of being able to combine the look of a toy camera image with the ease of my digital.

I also have played withHolgas, a newer design which have always stayed in production. I used it to take the image below just outside ofNashville.

Check out the many toy camera groups onflickr like thisDiana group. Also there is theToycam Handbook for even further exploration.
