Kawaii Kool

So far it has been a glorious summer in California. I am in what is known as the San Gabriel Valley and it can get pretty darn hot. Luckily, I have central air and some strategically placed fans.

As much as I love the ascetic of a vintage fan, there is a lot to be said about the functionality of the new ones. They also tend to be a lot quieter, so I was excited to find this beautiful Hunter fan, which combines old school design with brand new technology.

I think it is the perfect style + function choice for my bedroom.

Purse Envy

I am not sure when or how it started, maybe it has always been so. Though it does seem in just the last few years the accumulation has exceeded the need and I can only admit that I am an addict.

In my own defense some of them have been gifts, like this patent leather Prada bag from my generous sister. I usually use it just for special occasions.

Of course it should be no surprise that Orla Kiely is my favorite. For the last 5 years I have gifted myself a new Orla bag and sold an older one on eBay to help fund it. Though her prices are not as outrageous as some, they are not cheap either.

My most recent is from her Mainline line, it has leather trim and came with a cloth purse bag (bonus!) and I bought it on Amazon which has pretty good deals on Orla bags. I love the lollipop flower pattern. She recently opened a shop in NYC and I can't wait to check out next time I'm there.

Lulu Guinness designs bags with a definite retro flair, fairly pricy, I have acquired my small collection via eBay. Her bags are also very photogenic, I love using them as props.

Of course I love vintage bags as well and this amazing Rendl Original above, I bought eons ago in NY at the Piers Antique Show. I paid quite a bit for it and my only regret has been it's slow deterioration. The strap especially is in poor shape. I think possibly due to the humidity down here. Check this mint conditionRendl I found going for $2,400!

I found this handpainted wood purse at an estate sale and this very early 1900's pewter purse at an auction.

Check out more on the subject in this fun book, The Power of Handbags by Anna Johnson.

Shelf Life

Shelves are a great way to add both function and style to a space and can often be made by repurposing another item. At the top is a funky metal tray I found at an antiques fair and by simply mounting the back to the wall it is transformed. Below it is a great little industrial piece I bought at a yard sale and painted green.

This cute little vintage example I've had for so long, I've forgotten where I got it. Originally black, I gave it a little make over with a can of orange spray paint.

I found this charmer at Agora in Athens, Ga. It was actually being used by the seller for display and was not for sale. I got the owner to call her with my offer of $20 and it was mine. I love how it goes with the tile in my new bathroom.

I have spent a lot time perusing Etsy looking for other possible storage solutions. Searching with key words such as mid century and industrial have yielded the best results. I created this treasury with some of my favorite finds.

App Happy

Instagram is a fun FREE app  for iphones that has some groovy vintage filters you can apply. I particularly like this one called "Earlybird". I took these pics yesterday while running an errand out in the boonies, otherwise known as Conyers, Georgia.

Very easy to use, the only issue I have is there is no "save to camera roll" option. I would also like the option to use a photo from my library to apply the filters to any image.*

*Update: You can do this I was told, by clicking then little multi image icon in the bottom left corner while in camera/share mode.

Alameda Antiques Faire~Part 1

My trip just happen to coincide with this monthly one day event which draws an eclectic crowd from all over the bay area. So designer Lesley Evers and I went and here are some of our favorite finds.

Some of my favorite items are pictured above. I was drawn to color and whimsey, which there was no shortage of on this chilly summer day in the bay.

Lesley loves vintage clothing (her orange coat is a good example) and she pulled out some items she thought would be great scores. One of her favorite booths is King Vintage and there were many other clothing sellers. There was even a seller that specialized in vintage curtain panels!

She also swooned for these vintage paint by numbers paintings and bought two. These can be pretty collectiable, I believe John Waters has a huge collection.

My favorite treasure I didn't buy was this amazing carnival inspired painting~collage. At $200, I had to pass but it will be really unique find for someone.

I did splurge on this unique enamelware lunch box for $20.

The big bonus at this venue were food trucks! I will have my report on that adventure in Part 2!

Smeg: A Love Story ❤

I never really thought I would have a crush on an appliance but my love for the Smeg Fridge borders on the point of obsession. My ultimate dream kitchen would have 1920s vintage tile and a Smeg in light green. More of this kawaii loft at Micasa.

Based in Italy, they only recently became available in the U.S. and they are not cheap! I did find this a deal via Amazon, the retail price of $1999 is pretty on par but you would save with free shipping and no sales tax in most areas.

Destined to become a pop icon, if not one already. I love this illustration by Rojo & Garabato a groovy design team from Spain, be sure to check out their magazine!

I have only found the single door style available on this side of the pond. Still it's all about the color choices. Even the "cream" looks better than your average white fridge. I would love the one on the bottom right, with the freezer on the bottom. Oh and the light blue is pretty dreamy.

They even do custom finishes...the mind boggles!

Save the Date!

Yes, June 4th, a week from tomorrow is my mega yard sale and I will be getting rid of tons of great stuff. All in an effort to lighten my load in preparations for my move west in the fall. I have also invited a couple of my neighbors to join in so there will be lots to choose from!

Pretty much every thing you see (except the lamps, large painting and rug) here will be up for grabs, I love my entry way but don't anticipate having this extra space when I move. So if you live in or near Atlanta, I really hope to see some of you there and will post more info next week.

For you true yard sale addicts, this book by Bruce Littlefield is a must!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend, y'all!

This Much I Know is True...

Summer is looming and spring cleaning has become a necessary task in sorting out my life. Along with selling this beautiful Josie Natori slip only worn once by Colleen above for this shoot. I also went through all my magazines and not only listed three lots of Dominos but my 6 coveted issues of the brilliant Blueprint. I stacked the rest of my mags on my porch for my neighbors to go through before they get tossed our later tonight.

This Orla bag is also on the auction block, a great one for travel, I could fit my 15inch laptop in it. I don't think she even makes this size anymore. FYI: all auctions end this Sunday.

I am also adding a few special items to my etsy store, like this vintage handmade baby's comforter. An estate sale find that is both unique and kitschy. I thought it might just appeal to the slightly more creative etsy souls who could see it's potential.

Star Light...

Last fall, Melody Miller launched her first textile line, Ruby Star Rising, with Japan based company Kokka and it took off like a shooting star. An artist and graphic designer, all her designs incorporate her own original illustrations based on retro pop culture icons like view masters and radios. The fabric is now flying off the shelves, locally here in Atlanta you can find it at Whipstitch.

I love seeing how and where creative people do what they do. Melody just happens to be my neighbor and is also married to my former student, photographer Gregory Miller. Melody is generous about sharing her process and I especially love this recent inspiring blog post.

Since she works from home she often uses her dining room as a workspace. She started designing before she learned to sew, figuring a reliable seamstress could not be hard to find. When that proved not to be the case, she took lessons and also taught herself by sewing little animals.

Also a devotee of estate sales she seeks out vintage buttons, thread and other notions whenever she gets the chance. They perfectly compliment her fabric's vintage inspired motifs.

Good storage and organization are key for her in making her home also a successful work space. This great iKea cabinet with etched frosted glass front is a pretty way to hide away supplies.

Click above to see the full shoot in this little slice of Fresh Pie. Along with more of Melody's house, her beautiful daughter Iliana shows off a sweet little skirt that Melody whipped up. She even drew up an easy & uber kawaii "how to". If you're on an iPad or like to share it on Facebook, then use this link.

When I Grow Up...

...I want to be Lillian Bassman

Portrait of Lillian & Interview by Renée Jacobs

I first posted about this amazing photographer just over a year ago, her haunting black & white fashion images are a true source of inspiration. Over the weekend I read a wonderful interview with the 93 year old icon in Focus Magazine. It was fascinating to read about her early beginnings in a field so dominated by men at the time she began. I also found it striking that she manipulated a lot her final images in the darkroom as we do with Photoshop today. So ahead of her time.

"I had a desire, and this is without knowing photography, to soften the image, to eliminate what I thought was unimportant in the image."

"I was in car riding parrallel to her and we were driving 25 or 30mph, then 50!"

"Eventually when you get it to the point where you want it, there's a real sense of excitment. I still love to photograph"

Lillian is known for her b/w but I discovered this stunning color image of Suzy Parker via this incredible photostream. It is an amazingly comprehensive collection of vintage fashion images. Sets are sorted by models, designers and photographers, including a fantastic archive of Lillian's work. I think the key to staying young is to never stop learning. I love that Lillian is now dabbling in digital and working with her images on a computer, "...learning how to retouch and play."

I mentioned this book of Lillian's work before and it is worth the small splurge. You can also collect Lillian's original work, she is represented by the Staley Wise Gallery.

I found Focus through the Zinio iPad app , it also available for download for either your iPad or iPhone via iTunes, or look for it at Boarders or Barnes & Noble. I got it mainly for the article on Lillian but found lots of other interesting articles and plenty of beautiful images.

Home Study

I have been battling a wicked cold since last Friday and am just starting to feel like my old self. Somewhat homebound I decided to take a fresh look around using just my iPhone & the hipstamtic app with the cherry flash.

Apple is releasing the iPad 2 next week which will include a camera. It will be exciting to see the apps that become available, which should have the highest resolution available so far.

Deep South

I recently traveled with my friend Dana to Manchester, Tennessee. One of many road trips in the pursuit of pool winnings and adventure. You did not have to look very hard to find cool vintage signage & architecture.

I used a Canon G10 and processed them with a combination of Lightroom, Photoshop with the Picture Show iPhone app.

Sweet Dreams

Ahhh, the joys of a bedroom you truly love. I recently bought a new mattress set, replacing the old which had more lumps than a sugar bowl. This dogwood coverlet I consider one of my best finds ever and I love my new round pink pillow cover from Lesley Evers. A prop she made for our recent shoot from one of her new textile designs.

I have had the new mattress for just a week but already feel a huge difference. I got the firmest possible a level 5 and it is perfect, hard with just enough softness. I was also impressed that the telephone sales person helped me save over $100 by finding me the best possible deal on my choice. Bonus! I should be getting another $100 off since the price dropped again within 14 days of my purchase.

Many years ago, I found these wonderful unframed photos at a flea market for about $5each. So I could afford to splurge on beautiful frames and they now anchor either side of the window.

The seller thought she might be silent film star Theda Bara but I'm not so sure.

A photo of my mother as a teen (on the left) in a fun frame from West Elm. The little print was a $1 estate sale find. I use the yellow planter as handy storage for things like nail clippers & lip balm.

A combination of pretty afternoon light, a vintage barkcloth curtain panel and a group of etchings by my Great Aunt Sue make this a favorite corner.

I love this cat print, a gift from my sister. The cabinet & side table on the other side are both Russel Wright designs from the 30's. While my bed is a Heywood Wakfield and likely inspired by Wright's earlier furniture designs.

Pie was nominated again this year for a Lovelies Award for best photo blog. If you're on Facebook it is very easy to vote, click the button below and then just hit the like button. Not on FB? Then you can vote by leaving a comment.

Retro Lust

I had never heard of Lustron Homes till about a week ago when I was contacted by Readymade Magazine about doing a shoot for them featuring one. Introduced in 1947 they were a modern marvel at the time, a pre-fab house made completely of enamel coated steel. Both inside and out!

The company was based in Columbus, Ohio and shipped the homes, designed by Morris Beckman, all over the country. The houses originally sold for between 8,000-9,500 and were then assembled on site. Of the over 50,000 homes sold in the companies short 3 year existence, only about 2000 still remain standing.

Easy maintenance was a big selling feature but hold on...doesn't water + metal= rust?

They have now developed almost a cult like following with several sites devoted to the history and documenting of these little gems. I found both Lustron Connection and Lustron Preservation very informative. There has even been a film and books on the subject.

Well at least one of those homes made it to the Atl and I am excited to be photographing it for Readymade's February/March issue. So fun and really, could it be any more up my alley?

Kawaii "Diner" ware

My friend found this super kawaii diner style dishware by Peter Terris at a local yard sale. She bought them for me knowing I'm always in search of small lots for props and also becasue of my fascination with restaurant ware.

These were made by the Shenango Pottery Company that produced much of the diner china in the U.S. in the 50s and 60s.

"Diner" style dishes have a distinctive style and density. They can sometimes include the name of the establishment they were originally made for.

They appeal for me is not only for the vintage design but the little bit of history they represent.

I picked up this fun little dish at Kudzu Antiques.

The extra heavy weight made them more durable and is a distinctive trait for spotting true restaurant pieces. If you want a complete set but don't want to hunt for them, check out these fun reproductions by Pendleton.

This was part of a set sold by Fishs Eddy, which specializes in discontinued lines and restaurant salvage.

With Fall finally here, this might be a good weekend to go looking for your own!

Fossil-ize

Fossil has started creating fun and funky cases for e-readers. They sent me their newest "Key-Per" design to test out and review for Pie. It is both the perfect cover for traveling or everyday.

It has 4 credit card slots, several pockets, including a hidden one behind the reader and a secure zippered closure. Both the exterior and interior use a laminated cotton, which I love. It could easily be used on its own as an all in one clutch. Though it is still slim and light enough to fit into a medium size purse.

It securely holds either a Kindle 2 (above) or the Nook. A smaller version for the new Kindle 3 is in the works. It does not fold back but does lay flat when opened. You can also remove the reader easily if you prefer to read that way.

Love this key charm detail on the zipper. This cover will be available in mid October. Can't wait? Check out this groovy sleeve option.

UPDATE! The cover is now available! Click here to order. Or win this one!

Kawaii Salvage

I live near a very old church that was recently sold and they tossed out items that had been gathering dust for decades. Dozens of chairs were set out along with other curious items. I snagged this circus fabric which held a very old pillow form.

I could not resist these two windsor style children's chairs, even though don't yet have a use for them.

Kawaii 4 Sale

I  have added some extra kawaii items to myetsy store for my ongoingAtticus Project. Like this funnylittle deer I picked up at an antique mall. He is truly kawaii as he was made in Japan probably in the 1960s.

A hand paintedcowboy mug.

Amazing 1930s tin child'slunch pail.

Because I think this child's tea set is especially rare, I decided to list it oneBay.

By the way, Atticus is doing great! He completed his weekly chemo and now will just need to go back once a month for the next 8 months. We both appreciated all the kind emails and support!

Kawaii Crush: About Mo + Me

I am in love with the adorable interiors of Berlin based blogger Jo ofAbout Mo + Me, who I discovered through herflickr page. So deep is my crush, I asked if I could feature her and her creations on Pie. It was this stunning desk makeover that first caught my eye inDecor 8's interiorstyling pool.

Check out the before and after of this desk renovation for her son. She has a talent for taking a paint brush to vintage finds and making them fresh and whimsical. I especially love the paper choice lining the interior and the stripped leg detail.

Also talented with a needle she has created many of her own amazing accessories from this crocheted lamp to her own doilies, pillows and curtains.

Having a background in film and animation is apparent in her fanciful color choices and the careful placement of every item.

She even names some of her finds, the gorgeous green cabinet is named Mrs. Schmitt, after finding a note addressed to someone of that name behind a drawer.

An Interview with Jo

Who is "me' and who is "Mo"?

"Me", well, that's me, alias Jo. I turned forty this year and still can't believe it. I love literature and writing, taking pictures with my camera, gardening, playing ukulele and singing loud, training our cats, watching movies, listening to film scores and many more. Under the influence of Mo, I also learned a lot of other things, like to crochet, to embroider, to sew and to collect and revamp old furniture. To correct a misunderstanding, "Mo" isn't one of our cats. The cats are called Safran and Martini. So, who is Mo? First of all, I have to tell you, that Mo was around me, for as long as I can think, but it looks like, I'm the only one who can see her. Not all the time, of course, she appears and disappears at her own will. Does this sound nuts to you? It is! You might even call her an imaginative friend, but, please, don't tell her!

Where do you live exactly (house, apt.... area...)?

Two years ago, we moved from the urban Berlin Prenzlauer Berg area to the more rural outskirts of the German capital, where we rented a small house. Its ground floor is from 1880 but it's first floor was build in 2000. Although that renovation was done carefully, the house has a rather eclectic vibe. We try to reflect this by a mixture of (revamped) furniture and decoration stuff of different ages.

Where do you find your stuff, like the wonderful desk you redid?

Many finds are from small ads, eBay or thrift stores. Moreover Berlin has a lot of gorgeous flee markets! Our budget is very small, so most of the vintage furniture I buy is rummage, fairly anybody else is interested in. I got the desk, for example, at eBay for 5,50 €, with the help of Mr. Bargain.

What is your Profession?

At the moment, I work as a contract author for little children stories/comics but I'm a wannabe novelist, also. In the past, I've worked as a 3-D animation artist, television author for a fashion magazine and assistant director at a small theater.

What or who inspires you?

Besides Mo? And in respect of interior styling? First of all, my mom. She is a textile designer and theater costumer and used to re-design our house all the time in my childhood. I grew up, browsing her interior-design magazines, which became also a steady source of inspiration for me, until the day I discovered the blog-scene. It felt a little bit, like I had found lot's of brothers and sisters around the world, I never knew they even existed! The internet is a great resource for inspiration!

I love your textiles, like your curtains, did you make these?

I sewed the curtains from a fabric bought on sale atIkea. The living room ceiling is at about 3,5 meters and there are 3 large old double hung windows and one big glass front, so I needed lot's of fabric for that. Most of the other fabrics you can see atAbout Mo+ Me are vintage.

Coffee or Tea?

Cappuccino or Espresso in the morning. Earl Gray (with milk and suggar), Green Tea orRooibos Tea in the afternoon. :-)
